Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School Band

Email Mr. Fried
Hello Betsy Ross Band! Since we're not at school practicing our instruments, I will be updating this page with assignments, games, tours, recordings, and more as we all get through this hiatus together. There will be sections where you can check in and let me know how things are going, if you have your instrument and need specific help, or if you just want to say hello.  Check back often as content will be changing.

Stay healthy, everyone.

Week of March 16th

As you begin this at-home learning experience, here are some tips to help you with your day:
  • Keep to a schedule.
  • Have "class" time and have free time. When it's class time, put your phone away.
  • Learn and work like your brain depends on it.
  • Get caught up. If something doesn't make sense, email and ask.
  • Read a book. An actual book. One with pages and chapters.
Emphasis: New Music!
Below find PDFs of Mr. Blue Sky as well as an mp3 to listen. Give it a try on your instrument if you have it, write in fingerings if you need to, or just follow along.

Mr. Blue Sky Music Video
Yep. These dudes were huge. You would have liked them too if you were born 60 years ago.

Core Music: Use this drum kit generator to make a four beat rhythm.
Drum Kit Generator
Picture
(This is a sample image. Click the link in the box above to access the website.)

Along the left side, you'll see all the components of the drum set: crash cymbal, toms, snare, etc. Along the top, you'll see 1, 2, 3, and 4. Those are the beats in the measure. Along the bottom, you'll see 1-16. This is their way of counting 1 e + a  2 e + a  3 e + a  4 e + a. Click the boxes to activate each sound on a desired beat. I recommend clicking the "kick" drum on beats 1, 2, 3, and 4 so you can easily form a rhythm.
In the upper left bank, click the "Kit 1" dropdown for more instrument choices.
When you have completed your four beat rhythm, click the circle record button in the top right and email the recording if possible. If not, take a screenshot of your rhythm and send that. I will post the recordings of student work with your name so your classmates can hear your drum beats.

Please email me with questions.

5-10-150 Practice Challenge

To get used to practicing at home and with purpose, challenge yourself to practice for 5 days in  a week starting with 10 minutes.  Each day, add 10 minutes to your practice time.  5 days x 10 minutes added per day = 150 minutes of personal practice. Below is an example of how you can spend your time.

Day 1: 10 minutes
Day 2: 20 minutes
Day 3: 30 minutes
Day 4: 40 minutes
Day 5: 50 minutes

Write down what you want to accomplish and what you actually accomplish so you can better plan for next time.
The 5 days you practice do not have to be one after the other. You can skip two days in a week.
If you're already in  the habit of practicing longer, see how many minutes you can practice in 5 days.
