All-City Honors Ensembles at Yale
Among the ways that the Yale School of Music supports New Haven Public School students and music teachers is through the All-City Honors Ensembles. A combination of Yale Teaching Artists, NHPS music teachers, and special guests provides the best young musicians in New Haven with high level ensemble experiences in band, chorus, and orchestra.
The Yale Music in Schools Initiative, in collaboration with New Haven Public Schools, offers the All-City Ensembles during the school year. Students may participate in 8 different choir, orchestra, and band ensembles.
From Fall through Spring, graduate teaching artists and New Haven music educators instruct and mentor students in large ensembles, sectionals, and chamber music. Over 200 students participated in the ensembles in 2015-2016, representing about 1% of all students in New Haven Public Schools.
The All-City Ensembles provide tuition-free performance opportunities for students beyond the activities they have in their home schools. In addition, the ensembles provide practical training and work for graduate teaching artists. They work in collaboration with the ensemble conductors, most of whom are New Haven Public School music teachers.
This is a free program.

5-10-150 Challenge
To get used to practicing at home and with purpose, challenge yourself to practice for 5 days in a week starting with 10 minutes. Each day, add 10 minutes to your practice time. 5 days x 10 minutes added per day = 150 minutes of personal practice. Below is an example of how you can spend your time.
Day 1: 10 minutes p. 37 scales, parade music
Day 2: 20 minutes p. 37 scales, parade music, add dynamics
Day 3: 30 minutes p. 37 scales, add a scale, parade music with dynamics, start Polar Express
Day 4: 40 minutes 3 scales on p. 37, parade music with recording, Polar Express 1st movement
Day 5: 50 minutes 3 scales on p. 37, parade music with recording, Polar Express 1st movement, start on 2nd movement
Write down what you want to accomplish and what you actually accomplish so you can better plan for next time.
The 5 days you practice do not have to be one after the other. You can skip two days in a week. Remember 9/23 is no school so you'll have extra time to get practice in.
If you're already in the habit of practicing longer, see how many minutes you can practice in 5 days.
